Introduction to SharePoint Premium
Content experiences
- Build new contracts in Teams, using standardized templates and simply filling in key details like supplier, payment terms, etc
- Use AI-driven analyzer to evaluate contract terms and identify risks
And like most Microsoft products, more features are added on a regular basis. SharePoint Premium actually has been around for several years (although under different names), and has suffered quite a bit due to the confusion around the branding. I think the rebrand to “SharePoint Premium” begins to clear that up, clearly communicating that this is a premium solution on top of SharePoint (and Teams as well, but Teams Premium is another product. Oh no, things just became confusing again)
One thing I’ll point out is that these Teams apps to help with contracts, invoices, etc.. are actual solutions you’d probably pay some 3rd-party vendor for. The thing is, you get it from Microsoft, eliminating one more vendor to deal with. I’d certainly call that a win!
Content processing
- Annotate documents without affecting the original
- Split/merge PDFs with ease
- Work with contracts, work orders, invoices and more using the Business Documents app in Teams
- Automatically extract metadata from documents into their own columns
I’ve spent more time with these features than anything else, and I can tell you these are VERY good. These will greatly improve the lives of your users as well, eliminating the need to fill out endless metadata fields in some cases!
I’ve also made videos on my YouTube channel on most of these features, so check my SharePoint Premium playlist to see my coverage and demo of those features. I’ve had a lot of fun trying out the features and discussing what use cases they’d be great for.

Content governance
- Find out which sites are inactive
- Find out which sites have overshared content (prepping your environment for Copilot? This helps you)
- Find out which sites have sharing links, or content shared with “Everyone except external users”
- Quickly lock down a site, even overriding the site permissions, so only specified groups can access
- Configure policies to manage access reviews and attestations
These tools are indispensable to wrangle the wild-wild-west that your likely dealing with if you’re new to SharePoint governance. Depending on your phase of implementing governance, you can leverage one or multiple features to speed up that process and move onto the next.
Even after you’ve established a governance plan, these are tools you’ll use on an ongoing basis to make sure your environment stays lean and efficient.
Conclusion
I hope this has made SharePoint Premium easier to understand. It fits very nicely within the Microsoft 365 ecosystem and is a very well executed integration between SharePoint and Azure AI services. It also may just save you money that would otherwise go to some other vendor. I plan to create more content on all these features, not just here on my blog, but also my SharePoint Insights newsletter as well as on my YouTube channel, so keep checking in to continue learning!
